Why Dimensions Matter

Platforms aggressively re-compress and crop uploaded images. If you upload a 1080×1080 to Instagram Stories, Instagram crops to 9:16 and you lose the top and bottom of your design. If you upload a 16:9 image to TikTok, the safe zones eat the caption. Getting dimensions right once saves you from re-uploading (and re-losing algorithm momentum).

Universal Rules

  • Design at 2× target size and let the platform downscale — this preserves sharpness after compression.
  • Keep critical content out of the outer 5% — that zone gets cropped in previews.
  • Use PNG for text-heavy designs, JPG for photos. Some platforms re-compress PNG to JPG anyway.
  • Keep under 8 MB — bigger files get aggressively compressed or rejected.
  • Use WebP when offered — the Image WebP Optimizer tool on this site can convert.

Safe Zones Cheat Sheet

Instagram Reels & TikTok: top 220px reserved for UI overlays, bottom 340px for caption/CTA buttons. Design for the middle ~1080×1420 band. YouTube thumbnails: bottom-right corner reserved for duration stamp. Pinterest: 2:3 vertical is ideal — 1000×1500px.

Sizes FAQ

What's the current Instagram feed post size?

1080×1080 (1:1) for square posts, 1080×1350 (4:5) for portrait — 4:5 takes up more screen real estate and often performs better.

What's the TikTok video size?

1080×1920 (9:16). Design for the middle band; the top 220px and bottom 340px are eaten by UI.

YouTube thumbnail size?

1280×720. Minimum 640px wide. Must be under 2 MB. Bottom-right corner (about 120px) reserved for duration stamp.

Should I resize or re-export?

Always re-export from the original design file. Resizing a compressed JPG a second time produces visible artefacts.
